Abstract

The chapter discusses Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' in relation to the 'idea of empire' by attention to contemporary work in 'Blackwood's Magazine', Henry Stanley's 'In Darkest Africa' and William Booth's 'In Darkest England'. The chapter demonstrates Conrad's subversion of the tropes of imperial discourse.
