Bayreuth, Parsifal, and the Artwork of the Future

This essay interrogates Wagner’s conception of the ‘artwork of the future’. Considering Wagner’s dramas and Parsifal in particular principally from the standpoint of performance, the subsequent course of German history, the role and nature of Wagner’s audience, and the relationship between music and staging are discussed, with particular respect to Stefan Herheim’s Bayreuth staging of Parsifal. Might ideas adumbrated in the composer’s prose writings be better understood in the light of his dramas, rather than vice versa? What implications might that have for the future, whether of Wagner, Bayreuth, or musical drama more broadly understood?

Der vorliegende Essay unterzieht Wagners Vorstellung vom Kunstwerk der Zukunft einer kritischer Prüfung. Die Musikdramen und im Besonderen ‘Parsifal’ werden in erster Linie unter dem Gesichtspunkt ihrer theatralen Realisierung betrachtet, vornehmlich am Beispiel von Stefan Herheims Bayreuther ‘Parsifal’-Insznierung und deren Thematisierung der deutschen Geschichte, der Rolle von Wagners Publikum und der Beziehung von Musik und Bühnengeschehen. Dies führt zu der Vermutung, dass die in Wagners Schriften erkennbaren Ideen im Lichte der Bühnenwerke desser zu verstehen sind als umgekehrt. Was bedeutet das für die Zukunft, sei es die Wagners, Bayreuths oder des Musiktheaters allgemein?
