Abstract

Authorship is performative as well a published, and the early actress was empowered not only to speak her own mid, but to give public voice to the thoughts of women everywhere. This essay challenges notions of authorship through analysis of the actress's craft, using case studies of Nell Gwyn and Susannah Cibber to prove that actresses have made significant - and often overlooked- contributions to literary history.
