Abstract

The present study sought to examine whether perceptual organization
influences auditory-verbal serial short-term memory. Lists of to-be-remembered digits were spoken from a single location or from multiple spatial locations. Our results showed that spatial variability impaired serial recall when the digits were spoken alternately via left-right loudspeakers (Experiment 1), but not when they were presented via seven speakers surrounding the participants (Experiment 2). Our findings provide further evidence that serial memory is influenced by the perceptual organization of the to-be-remembered sequence.
