Age

Abstract

This chapter explores the relevance of age in a critical understanding of crime and mental heath problems and offers considerations for counselling and forensic practice. After a brief discussion about the relationship between age and identity, the chapter explores representations of age in the media and how responses to these have contributed to changes in policy. The relationship between mental health and age is approached from the perspective of critical age risk periods for the development or emergence of mental health problems. This is followed by a critique of age in the context of the legal and criminal justice systems, including the prevalence of offending behaviours by age, age-related risk factors for crime, and patterns of offending behaviour across the lifespan. Some examples of the inter-relationships between age, mental disorder and offending behaviour are discussed, before consideration is given to the assessment, formulation and treatment of needs of clients throughout the lifespan.
