The Transnational Governance of Violence and Crime

This collaborative project analyzed which forms of governance can be used when facing violence and crime. While governance research has continuously underlined the importance of public-private interaction in establishing order and providing public goods, it is unclear whether such models of transnational governance can also be found to be effective when it comes to security, a core function of modern statehood. The project has been financed by the Cluster of Excellence ‘Normative Orders’ of the German Research Foundation (DFG). It brought together doctoral candidates as well as senior scholars who examined public and private actors related to security, including warlords, landmines or cybercrime. A major outcome – based on an international workshop – has been a co-edited volume published with Palgrave in 2013.
