Performance and Asylum: Embodiment, Ethics, Community

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Currently convened by Dr Emma Cox, this transnational network focuses on theatrical performance, and examines issues concerning refugees and asylum seekers in Britain, Europe and Australia by facilitating connections between researchers, theatre practitioners and community stakeholders.

The network’s primary aim is to explore the complexity of refugee representation (by refugees and others) as it relates to globalisation and fears about national security. This research will progress via a series of activities, including workshops, symposia and internet discussions. While highlighting performance as an exemplary medium through which to explore questions about identity, belonging, refuge, corporeality, surveillance and ethics, the network also aims to involve scholars from other disciplines to expand and energise specific, performance-based research work.

Funded 2006 –2007 by the AHRC with a Network Grant to Professor Helen Gilbert under the auspices of the Diaspora, Migration and Identities Programme.
