Description

Open Weather is a project by Sophie Dyer and Sasha Engelmann probing the noisy relationships between bodies, atmospheres and weather systems through experiments in amateur radio, open data and intersectional feminist approaches to environmental sensing.

Open Weather encompasses a series of how-to guides, critical frameworks and public workshops on the reception of satellite images using free or inexpensive amateur radio technologies. When possible, Open Weather works with open source software and hardware. The Open Weather web platform hosts an archive of amateur radio-generated weather images produced by members of the Open Weather community. The Open Weather 'critical frameworks' are a series of performances and artistic projects that draw on satellite image decoding and weather sensing while bringing new kinds of knowledge, alternative histories and creative practices into the frame.
