Pilot Study on Cannes Film Festival:
A-list festivals such as Cannes, Venice and Berlin are credited not only with discovering world cinema auteurs but are also charged with encouraging strategies of self-exoticisation in non-Western filmmakers. The Pilot Study, conducted by RA Chris Fujiwara, aims to test this hypothesis through a detailed analysis of festival programmes, trade press coverage, film reviews and through tracing the transnational circulation and reception of exotic films that won prizes at Cannes between 2000-2016. Drawing on his numerous film festival contacts, Fujiwara will also conduct interviews with people currently or formerly involved in the programming of films at Cannes, seeking to elicit information about how films that can be identified as exotic were selected and what role their exotic appeal has played in winning prestigious festival prizes
