The Lewis Penny Medal is awarded to a young (normally less than 35 years old) or new research worker, who has been a member of the Quaternary Research Association (QRA) for at least 3 years, and who has made a significant contribution to the Quaternary stratigraphy of the British Isles and its maritime environment. Quaternary Stratigraphy is considered here to include both Pleistocene and Holocene records and to be broadly-based, encompassing lithostratigraphy, chronostratigraphy, biostratigraphy or other relevant fields.
The winner of the Lewis Penny Medal for 2014 is Bethan Davies, Royal Holloway University of London. Bethan has made a very significant contribution to advancing understanding of the Quaternary stratigraphy of Britain and surrounding seas. Her work on the coast of NE England has led to a step-change in our knowledge of Middle and Late Pleistocene glacial-interglacial stratigraphy.
