Educational background

Yas (Yasutaka) Kabuto was educated at the University of Tokyo, where he received his BA (Arts and Sciences) and MA (European Studies).

Research interests

Kabuto’s project aims to explore the character and transformation of the novel in British modernism, tracing the shifting conceptions about progress and reproduction of self and community in Virginia Woolf’s aesthetic practice. A particular focus is ways in which novels in the early twentieth century appeared as successors of a nineteenth-century bildungsroman and changed themselves over time.

His dissertation will examine modernist bildungsroman against the background of contemporary demographic transformations and discourse concerning those trends in Britain from the turn of the century to the World War II, and analyse how the statistical and discursive changes thematically and formally influenced Woolf’s literary works.
