Personal profile

Valentine Gavard-Suaire's research interests include critical perspectives on modern slavery and human trafficking studies, legal geography and feminist political geography. Her PhD research looks at protection initiatives in the context of risky migration between Vietnam and the UK. She examines the challenges in setting up support options for Vietnamese people seen as vulnerable to trafficking and exploitation, in a context marked by different forms of hiding and invisibility practices. She analyses the extend to which Vietnamese migrants' lived experiences and voices can inform anti-slavery and anti-trafficking representations and projects. Her fieldwork in Vietnam, where she will look at the situation for returnees from the UK, is supported by the 2019 Sarah Howie Prize, the Paul Broome Prize & RHUL.
