Dr Thomas Stubbs

Personal profile

I am a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Royal Holloway, University of London, and a Research Associate in Political Economy at the Centre for Business Research, University of Cambridge.

My research spans international public policy, global and public health, political and economic sociology, political economy, and East African politics. I am currently pursuing the following topics:

  • Socioeconomic effects of International Monetary Fund lending
  • Political economy of East African social policy
  • Lived experiences of precarity in New Zealand

My research has been funded by Cambridge Political Economy Society TrustCambridge Commonwealth Trust and Nga Pae o te Maramatanga. It has appeared in leading academic journals, including American Journal of SociologyReview of International Political EconomyReview of International Organizations​, Social Science & Medicine, and World Development.

I also developed and maintain the IMF Monitor website, used by civil society organisations, national policymakers, and international organisations to track policy reforms required of borrowing countries in exchange for the IMF’s financial support.
