Personal profile

Research interests

I am a historian of modern Britain, specialising in popular culture and gender.

My main research to date centres on the history of popular culture and consumption in modern Britain, and in particular, on the history of drinking cultures in the twentieth century.

Underpinning my research are core interests in the complex relationships linking consumption and identity within and across popular cultures. My central research themes focus on the influence of gender and age on recreational cultures, the creation and negotiation of social spaces, and contested attitudes towards respectability.

I also have research interests in the history of feminism and citizenship in twenthieth-century Britain.
