Research interests

Sophie Nield works on questions of space, theatricality and representation in political life and the law, and on the performance of ‘borders’ of various kinds: the US/Mexico border; the former site of the Berlin Wall; the problem of the corpse in representation. She also has research interests in film (particularly Expressionism, New German Cinema and US paranoia film) and nineteenth century stage-craft.

She is a member of the advisory panels of About Performance (University of Sydney) and Performance Matters (Simon Fraser University). She served on the Executive Committee of the Theatre and Performance Research Association from 2006 - 2013, and from 2009 - 2013 was a member of the Board of Directors of Performance Studies international. She was P.I. and Director of the AHRC-funded Mander and Mitchenson Theatre Collection Access for Research Project (2003 - 6), and was a Trustee and member of the Board of Directors of the Collection from 1999 until its transfer to the University of Bristol. With Prof. Nicholas Ridout of QMUL, she co-founded the London Theatre Seminar in the Institute of English Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

She welcomes enquiries about research supervision in the areas of: space, theatricality and performance; film and representation; theatrical 'magic' and stage technology; historiography; ‘border’ theatres; protest, demonstration and dissent; public ceremony and political life.
