Dr Shyqyri Haxha

Personal profile

Dr Haxha received the MSc and PhD degrees from City University in London in 2000 and 2004, respectively. He has also obtained several world-class industrial trainings and diplomas such as Executive MBA Cambridge Judge Business School and Mini Telecom MBAs. He was awarded the SIM Postgraduate Award from The Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers in Cambridge for his highly successful contribution in research.

Currently, he is a Reader at Royal Holloway, University of London, Department of Electronic Engineering Egham, Surrey, United Kingdom. Prior to this post, he was a lecturer in Optic Communication at the School of Engineering and Digital Arts, University of Kent, Canterbury, United Kingdom.

Dr Haxha expertise is focused on designing and optimizing, photonic and microwave devices, and systems for applications in Sensor Technology (Medical and Environmental), Nanotechnology and Telecommunication Systems. Dr Haxha research interests are in the areas of microwave photonics, photonic crystal devices, metamaterials, photonic crystal fibres, nano-sensors, optical sensors, surface plasmon polaritons (SPP), biosensors, ultra-high-speed electro-optic modulators, compact integrated optic devices, Optical CDMA, Optical FDM, and Optical MIMO systems. He has developed and demonstrated RF over fibre transmission systems for the aviation industry, including cybersecurity protection for commercial and defense applications. Dr Haxha was a Telecommunication CEO in partnership with Cable & Wireless Communications Ltd., a British multinational telecommunications company, and Monaco Telecom International. 

He a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Senior Member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (Senior MIEEE), Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Editorial Board Member for MDPI journals and Associate Editor of IEEE Sensors Journal. 

Dr Haxha has published over 200 papers in international journals (over 107 journals) and conferences such as Nature- Scientific Reports, IEEE transactions (32 IEEE Journals), Optics Express, Applied Optics (OSA), IET, Springer and Elsevier. He is the author of 7 patents, three of them are fully funded by Industry. 

As a Principal Investigator (PI), Dr Haxha has been awarded research funding for over £1.3 million from different funders including UKRI, the National Aerospace Technology Programme (NATEP), the Royal Society, charitable trusts and large industry partners.

- Microwave Photonic Mixer over Optics Communication Channel for 5G and beyond. Funded by Industry (£60K) (January 2019-May 2019)

 

- Automotive Industry (£1K) (January 2019-April 2019)

 

- National Aerospace Technology Programme (NATEP) funding £280K: Developing New Photonic Architectures using GaAs Modulators.

 

- The Royal Society International funding £12K in collaboration between UK and ETRI South Korea on designing of Novel Polymer Electro-optic Modulator. Including several EPSRC studentships.

 

- Rolls-Royce; Project funding £80K on Biosensor-biofilm development detection based on dual-channel planar waveguide Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) for aqueous environment applications.

 

- Knowledge Transfer Partnerships - Innovate UK. Project funding £159K: Design of Advanced Emerging Technology Sensor System.

 

- Nuffield Award funding £5K: Novel Design of Polarization Controller based on GaAs. 

 

- Received funding of around £200K from industry on designing Non-Invasive Glucose Wearable Sensors for Continuous Monitoring of Glucose Levels in Blood, and novel Microwave Photonic Architecture with improved SFDR.

 

 He is author of several patents in the area of photonics, RF over fiber and sensors devices for health and environmental applications.
