Dr Sarah Jenkins

Personal profile

My research interests lie broadly in the field of judgement and decision-making. More specifically, my research focuses on the communication and understanding of risk and uncertainty information, across a range of domains, including natural hazards, product safety, food safety, law and medicine. Using a variety of social science methods, I am interested in exploring how such communications can be improved to guide decision-making.

I am currently collaborating with the Office for Product Safety and Standards (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy). In this project, I am investigating consumer perceptions of risk and responsibility across different products and places of purchase, using cultural evolution research to model how risk attitudes spread within a population.

I am also involved in a project with the UK Met Office, which is investigating impact-based forecasting and warnings in South East Asia. This research aims to examine interpretation of these warnings by both forecasters and stakeholders, with the aim of developing ways to enhance their effectiveness.

I have extensive experience of carrying out inter-disciplinary, applied research, having collaborated with a range of public sector organisations, including the: UK Met Office, British Geological Survey, Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, Food Standards Agency (FSA), Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), as well as charitable organisations, including The Samaritans and Big Lottery Fund.
