Personal profile

Since completing an  ESRC funded research project, “Implications of the Criminal Justice & Public Order Act 1994 for Youth Culture in the Suburban South East”, my research and specialist teaching has focussed on youth and youth culture in contemporary society.  The 1994 act had a specific section related to youth culture, “Powers in Relation to Raves”, in which the police were given a range of new powers to control the dominant youth culture of the time.

The focus of my work is on (1) young people as creative producers within contemporary capitalism through the making of distinctive new cultural forms; (2) youth and youth culture as an object of ongoing attempts by the state and wider society to control it; (3) youth culture as a form of transgressive culture
