The focus of my thesis is on a number of ancient Greek tragedies produced for British and American television in the late twentieth century.  My primary interest is in the performance and reception of the Greek tragic chorus and on the experience of the spectator as receiver and interpreter of the visual dimension of a 'mediated' rather than a 'live' performance.  The study will analyse and compare an hypothesised version of the performance in the Theatre of Dionysus with its reconstruction in a television studio, two radically different performance spaces each associated with a radically different audience space.
