Personal profile

I study intraplate tectonic processes on Earth and Venus, where they are the dominant process shaping the planet. I use radar interferometry (InSAR) to measure fault movements at the millimetre per year level, an order of magnitude smaller than previously possible, for the first time permitting a quantitative assessment of intraplate deformation. I use the same technique to detect passive (inactive) faults by their effect on groundwater flow, and a variety of other movements relevant to ground engineering. I founded the Engineering Scale Geology Research Group to study and develop these ground investigation techniques and I lead the ESA M5 candidate mission to Venus, EnVision, which will allow me to apply these techniques to characterise and measure tectonic activity on Venus.
