Poppy is a Cultural Producer and Researcher, with experience delivering arts training, exchange and performance projects in the UK, East Africa, Asia and Latin America. Poppy is Co-founder and Producer of East African Soul Train, a travelling residency for artists on Kenya’s historic tracks; work closely Boutiq Foundation, a community-based arts organisation in Kampala; and am the producer of Nyege Nyege International Music Festival, Uganda. Passionate about the relationship between policy, practice and research, supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, she is currently undertaking a PhD in Drama and Geography with Royal Holloway, University of London. Poppy's doctorate is focused on how atmospheres manifest in contemporary performance and is entitled ‘Taking Performance Seriously: the role of the producer and the potential of atmosphere in the development of contemporary arts in East Africa’. This practice-based PhD project is concerned with how an exploration of atmosphere and the producer can help move debates beyond cause and effect narratives, so dominant in the development industry, and what the value and impact of this might be for contemporary arts in the region.
