Personal profile

Poppy is a Creative Producer and Research with over ten years’ experience producing contemporary art and cutting-edge performance projects in the UK, East Africa and Latin America. Since 2016, Poppy has produced a range of internationally recognised events and projects in East Africa, which have looked to create new opportunities for artists, audiences and raise the profile of the region’s contemporary cultural scene. Passionate about the relationship between policy, practice and research, supported by Techne and the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Poppy recently completed her practice-based PhD in Drama and Geography with Royal Holloway, University of London. Poppy’s doctoral research 'Producing Performance, Producing Atmosphere: Looking Beyond Development in the Production of Art and Performance in East Africa’ evolved from her work as a producer with Nyege Nyege International Music Festival and Co-founder and Producer of East African Soul Train, a creative adventure and pop-up residency centred around a journey on the region’s historic railway. Poppy’s research is concerned with how an exploration of atmosphere, uncertainty and the role of the producer can move debates beyond instrumental development paradigms, and help in reimagining the role of contemporary art and performance in East Africa.
