The Norman Kingdom of Sicily, Crusading and the Crusader States, c.1060-1198

I am interested in the roles played by what becomes the Italo-Norman Kingdom of Sicily in relation to both the crusading movement and the Latin States of the Near East. Whilst historians have written extensively about the establishment and nature of the Italo-Norman Kingdom, its ongoing and changing relationship with, and impact upon, the shaping of the Latin East has often been neglected. I have been looking at a range of strands, including military involvement, diplomacy, and the extent to which the Italo-Norman Kindgom of Sicily acted as a bridge between East and West. The issue of identity is a key theme of my research, in terms of how it changes over time, and its impact upon the political alignment of the kingdom.
