Personal profile

Michelle Springfield has an BA in Politics and Social Policy and an MA in The Politics of Democracy, from Royal Holloway. Her PhD thesis is on 'Famine: A political and Philosophical analysis' under the supervision of Dr Jonathan Seglow. Her thesis challenges the simple approaches to the relationship between populations and food (demographic and liberal economic theories) and examines the more complex approaches that recognise the political and social context of famine. It is argued that a better understanding of the political, thus preventable, causes of famine, from both an historical and contemporary perspective, is crucial in any serious attempt to prevent their occurrence. An exploration of the ways in which those considered responsible for famine can be held accountable at both the national and the international level is a central feature of this thesis.
