Dr Martina Hutton

Personal profile

Martina's research interests lie at the intersection of transformative consumer research and critical marketing.  More specifically she focuses on consumer poverty, vulnerability and marketplace stress and exclusion. With a PhD in Equality Studies from the internationally renowned UCD School of Social Justice, she is an experienced qualitative PEFT researcher (Participatory, Emancipatory, Feminist, Transformative), actively engaging with community stakeholders and diverse groups of people experiencing economic difficulties and social/material marginalisation.

Research interests

Her work aims to create a substantive link between marketplace exclusion and economic vulnerability, with a particular focus on the stratification processes which impact overlooked consumer groups on the margins of society. She has worked with low-income women, those living with disabilities/impairments, hunger, homelessness and ex-offenders who are navigating system-wide barriers post release.

Martina is a three-time international funding recipient of the ACR (Association of Consumer Research) TCR grant.  Her work has also received funding awards from the Academy of Marketing, the Sheth Foundation and the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences.  During 2021/2022 she is a Marketing Trust/Academy of Marketing Impact Funding Awardee for her study on “Radical Community Response-Ability: Learning Partnerships with Others”

She is published widely in international journals including, the Journal of Business Research, Marketing Theory, European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, Qualitative Market Research, Consumption, Markets & Culture and the Journal of Marketing Management.

Martina serves on the TCR Advisory Committee, an international board which aims to support, and publicise Transformative Consumer Research. She is also an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Marketing Management, an Editorial Review Board member of Consumption, Markets & Culture and is currently co-Editor of a special issue for the Journal of Consumer Affairs on “GenderS and Consumer Well-being.”
