Personal profile

Personal profile

I research and write about a variety of topics in the history of music, music analysis, and dance. My work usually concerns the history of music theory, music in multimedia, or the interrelations between music and other arts and disciplines.

My PhD is funded by a Techne AHRC Doctoral Studentship and a Royal Holloway College Studentship. My thesis investigates musical texture as an idea and in musical works approximately from 1900 to 1960. It provides a historical account of how and why this expression came about, its shifting and multiple meanings, and how critics, scholars and composers have theorised about it. Simultaneously, I analyse the compositional practices that prompted such theorising, and develop a vocabulary for exploring texture in music more broadly.

While pursuing my doctorate I have held an IPS Fellowship at the Library of Congress, Washington D.C. In September and October 2022 I was a residential scholar at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice, where I researched the work of choreographer Aurel Milloss. I am currently a Research Fellow at the Residencia de Estudiantes CSIC, a prestigious cultural institution in Madrid, Spain.

In 2018 I completed an MMus in Advanced Musical Studies, supported by a Bedford Society Scholarship. I also hold a BA in Music from the University of Oxford.

I am an intermittent but keen pianist, and besides academia I have a passion for dance, comics, and toast.
