Lewis Mondal

I joined Royal Holloway in September of 2022 as a lecturer in African American Literature. I'm originally from Middlesbrough in north-east England and remain a (relatively) proud Teessider despite my wanderings to Surrey! My PhD was on neoslave narratives - namely how they function as belated 'Dark' Victorians and their conceptual/theoretical associations with contemporary representations of the British nineteenth century.

More broadly my research is interested in reading contemporary engagements with the past - within the context of African American literary theory - and approaching texs through a cultural/critical lens. I am also interested more broadly in both theoretical and fictional works that focus on the subject of racial identity in culture. This includes work on the legacies of Nat Turner, Charles Johnson's Middle Passage and Sara Collins 2019 novel The Confessions of Frannie Langton.

I currently teach on American Literature from 1900 to 2000; African American Literature; Re-orienting the Novel; and Afterlives of Slavery.
