Mr Karl Mason

Personal profile

I am a Lecturer in Social Work and the Programme Lead for the BSc Social Science.  I joined Royal Holloway as a part-time Lecturer in 2015 and was appointed on a full-time contract in 2017.

Before joining Royal Holloway, I trained as a social worker at Trinity College Dublin, graduating in 2002.  I have worked as a social worker in children's services in Dublin (5 years) and London (2 years) and for the NHS at a London hospital as an A&E Social Worker and Manager for a social work team and multi-disciplinary homelesness team (8 years).  I have also volunteered in organisations that worked with older people and people with learning disabilities and continue to volunteer for St Mungos homelessness charity. I am qualified as a Best Interests Assessor and Practice Educator.

I teach on the BSc Social Science, the MSc Social Work, the PG Dip (Step Up) and the MSc Advanced Practice.  I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  I am an external examiner for social work programmes at Leeds Beckett University.  I am a member of the Advisory Group on Discriminatory Abuse hosted by the Local Government Association's Care and Health Improvement Programme.

My research and teaching interests include adult social care and safeguarding policy and practice, particularly in relation to people who are homeless, self-neglect and hospital discharge and the ways in which LGBTQ+ people experience social work and social care services.  I am currently leading Teaching Partnership-funded projects on LGBTQ+ issues on social work placement and on working with carers during COVID-19.  I am a PhD student researching the perspectives of people who are homeless in relation to their care and support needs and how these are met.
