Personal profile

Karen Sandhu is currently completing her PhD in contemporary poetry and artists’ books at Royal Holloway. She is an AHRC TECHNE Associate and an Associate Member of the Poetics Research Centre at Royal Holloway. Her poems are forthcoming in Writing Utopia (Hesterglock Press, 2020) and Women’s Visual Poetry Anthology (Timglaset Editions, 2021).  Her poetry has been previously published in Digital Poetics (87 Press, 2020), DATABLEED (2019) and Para-text (2019). She has collaborated with the Institute of Contemporary Arts, Flat Time House and Camden People’s Theatre (London), Arnolfini (Bristol) and Galerie Eric Dupont (Paris). She has also written for The Blue Notebook: Journal for Artists’ Books,and her artworks have been exhibited at The Showroom (London) and Galerie éof (Paris).

Research interests

Her research interests include: artists' books and visual arts, avant-garde and contemporary poetry, philosophy and art, experimental live performance and theatre, collaborative artistic practices, archives as sites for performance, curation of art and poetry.

Educational background

Karen Sandhu graduated in English Literature from Royal Holloway in 2007 and completed a MA in Poetic Practice in 2009. She completed a PGCE in English in 2011 as part of the Teach First programme. She was awarded a College Studentship in 2017 to complete a PhD in art and contemporary poetics, focusing on the concept of the artwork and/or poem as 'irritant'.


Karen Sandhu is a Visiting Tutor in the Department of English and Creative Writing at Royal Holloway. She has taught on the following undergraduate courses: Introduction to Creative Writing; Thinking as a Critic; Introduction to Poetry; Creative Writing: Poetry. In 2020 she was a guest lecturer in the Department of Art, University of Reading. Previously, she spent 10 years teaching Art, English Language and Literature in UK secondary schools and sixth form colleges.
