Background

Jos graduated from Oxford Brookes University in 1987 with a first class BA degree in Anthropology and History. He then completed a one-year intensive course in Modern Chinese at Thames Valley University. From 1988-90 he studied Chinese language and literature at Fudan University in Shanghai, before returning to London to take a MA in Social Anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He continued at SOAS to study for a DPhil in Social Anthropology, this involved over seventeen months research in Shanghai. His thesis explored socio-economic changes in post-1992 Shanghai including the development of the share market, the rise of popular consumerism and changing cultural identities.

After completing his DPhil, Jos worked as a researcher at the School of Management of the University of Bath on a multi-disciplinary ESRC-funded project (with Barry Wilkinson, John Humphrey and Jonathon Morris) examining ‘Manufacturing Organization in the Asia Pacific’. This project focused on supply chain management, production organization and human resource management practices in Japanese, Korean and Hong Kong multinationals in the garments and electronics sectors. Jos undertook field research in the Asia Pacific region (China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Thailand) for one year on this project. He carried out research at over 70 manufacturing plants and interviewed many government, business organization, research institute and trade union representatives in the region.

In 2003, Jos received an award of £172,904 under the ESRC/AHRC Cultures of Consumption programme to fund the project ‘Multinational Retailers in the Asia Pacific’. This exciting project ran for four years (2003-7), for further details see the Cultures of Consumption website http://www.consume.bbk.ac.uk/research/gamble.html and ESRC Society Today

To further develop his research interests in Japan, Jos spent two sabbatical terms (2001, 2004) as a Visiting Scholar at the School of Commerce, Waseda University, Tokyo. A Chinese-speaker, he has visited China for research purposes on numerous occasions. To update and improve his language skills, during 2014-16 he completed a total of 538 hours of intensive Chinese language courses in Taibei, Taiwan.
