Joel is a registered clinical and forensic psychologist with a background in criminology.  Joel completed his MA psychology (University of St Andrews) and MSc in forensic psychology (University of Kent). He went on to complete a PhD in criminology (University of Cambridge) and a doctorate in clinical psychology (University of Manchester).

Joel is the programme director of the MSc forensic psychology and continues to work clinically in the criminal justice system. His research interests are in youth justice, the psychosocial experience of imprisonment, rurality and offending, and the use of digital technology to support young people leaving care.

Joel is currently working on the following research projects:

  • rurality and rule-breaking (seed funded by The Reid Research fund)
  • exploring the use of digital technology to support young people leaving care in collaboration with Avril Furness (VR Filmmaker (seed funded by StoryFutures) https://www.storyfutures.com/news/seed-funding-call
  • an evaluation of the psychological framework underpinning the National House Project in collaboration with Dr Caroline Lanskey and Ms Hannah Marshall (Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge) (funded by the Department for Education).

Joel is the author of the book Young Men in Prison and co-editor of Psychological Therapy in Prisons and Other Secure Settings and Young People in Forensic Mental Health Settings.
