The Byzantine Black Sea, c. 1000-1204

My research focuses on the interactions between the Byzantine Empire and the Black Sea during the period before the Fourth Crusade; whilst my investigation initially focussed on the Italian city states of Venice, Genoa and Pisa, my research quickly showed that there was much more diverse commerce taking place in the Black Sea than had been generally recognised. My research covers approximately two centuries of Black Sea trade before the until the fall of Constantinople radically changed the situation in 1204; during this period, merchants from Italy, Russia, Anatolia, the Steppes and the Caucasus formed a trade network stretching from Iceland to India.
