My research focusses on what children can learn from ‘educational’ apps and what features makes these apps educational (or not!). My current research project is focussed on the Early Years Foundation Stage school readiness skill of letter-sound knowledge, and how apps can be utilised in the teaching of this. I will be using a pre-post-test paradigm to investigate whether pre-schoolers can learn letter sounds from apps, and how this learning compares to learning from traditional methods such as books. I will also be investigating the effects of differing levels of interactivity and gamification on both learning and enjoyment outcomes, as well as investigating the potential benefits of co-using apps. My future research will also look at the effect of avatars in apps, and how this para-social interaction compares to real-life social interaction (such as the caregiver co-using the app).
