Georgia Vavva is an ethnomusicologist with a background in music and anthropology. She holds a BA in Music from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, an MA in Social Anthropology (with Distinction) from Queen's University Belfast and a Ph.D in Ethnomusicology from Royal Holloway, University of London (awarded in 2019), funded by the Crossland Research Scholarship. Her current research concerns music and the economic crisis in Greece with a particular focus on the Athenian jazz scene. She specializes on music and globalization, the politics of value, urban music cultures and change, and the ethnography of the economic crisis in the Mediterranean. She has published at Polyphony and The Greek Review of Social Research.

Georgia has worked as a research associate for the European funded programme "Western Art Music at the Time of Crisis: An Interdisciplinary Study of Contemporary Greek Culture and European Integration" (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, 2014-2015). In addition, she was a Teaching Assistant at Royal Holloway, University of London for the academic year 2016-2017, and has ten years' teaching experience in post-secondary and HE level. Beyond academia Georgia is an experienced performer and tutor of classical guitar and electric bass and performs regularly in Athenian venues.
