My thesis was titled "Producing better sports turf through soil microbial management" and considered how microbial incoulants could be used in sports turf. Sports turf is an integral part of the UK economy, contributing valuable public green space, employment and £20.29 billion of economic activity.

Research looked at:

  • The existing microbial populations of golf courses using illumina sequencing and PLFA, and how current management practises can affect these populations.
  • How species of arbuscular mycorrizal fungi and plant growth promoting bacteria interact with different grass species, and the impacts they can have on inequality.
  • The benefits arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculants can have on sports turf in terms of drought tolerance, reduced fertiliser use and growth reduction of the pest grass Poa annua.
