Personal profile

Elaine McGirr is Head of the Department of Drama and a Reader in Theatre History, specialising in the long eighteenth century.  Research interests include politics and/of performance, eighteenth-century Shakespeare, masculinity, maternity, and the intersections of gender, genre and national myth.  Publications include Partial Histories (Palgrave, 2016), Heroic Mode and Political Crisis, 1660-1745 (Delaware, 2009) and Eighteenth-Century Characters (Palgrave, 2007) as well as a co-edited collection on the realities and representations of maternity on the stage (Bucknell, 2014) and articles on Clarissa, Sir Charles Grandison, Aphra Behn, Shakespearean adaptation, eighteenth-century comedies, the rise of the novel, and private theatricals.
