I investigate shared holy places, people and miracles of the eastern Mediterranean in the Late Antique and Byzantine periods. Sacred space has been at the centre of modern scholarship. Studies on perceptions of sacred space have widened our knowledge of religion and spirituality as principal elements in the understanding of the history and tradition of a society. The area of shared sacred space is of particular interest, as it reveals a dimension of human psyche that transcends cultural limits. My thesis explores spaces shared by the three major monotheistic religions ̶ Judaism, Christianity and Islam ̶ in the wider area of the Mediterranean, between the rise of Islam in the 7^th century and the apogee of the Ottoman Empire in the 17^th century. The purpose of the investigation is to better understand what these shared spaces, and experiences, meant to individuals and communities within and outside certain religious traditions.
