Dr David Wearing

Personal profile

David is a specialist on UK foreign relations in the Middle East. He joined the department in 2017 as a Teaching Fellow in International Relations, running courses on US foreign policy and Non-State Violence, and designing and introducing a new postgraduate course on the political economy of the Middle East.

Prior to this David completed his PhD on UK relations with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Arab monarchies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, passing with no corrections.

Research interests

David's book "AngloArabia: Why Gulf Wealth Matters To Britain" was published by Polity in September 2018. It is the only book length study of the UK's relations with Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf Arab monarchies in the modern era.

David's broad research agenda concerns UK foreign relations in the global south, exploring continuities with the days of formal empire. His primary specialism is the political economy of the ties between Britain and the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE and Oman). His research covers the geopolitics of oil and gas, trade and investment, arms sales and military cooperation. He takes a particular interest in the British government's response to the 2011 Arab uprisings in the Gulf, and its support for the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen's civil war that commenced in 2015.

David's current research examines the changing ways in which 'orientalist' discourses and subjectivities continue to inform UK foreign relations in the Middle East, specifically in respect of support for authoritarian regimes and how that support is explained and justified by elites.
