Personal profile

I am a Senior Lecturer and the Director of Undergraduate Programmes in the Department of Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London. I am a Chartered Psychologist, a member of the British Psychological Society Undergraduate Education Committee, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a recipient of several teaching prizes.  I co-ordinate Final Year Undergraduate Research Projects. I have been involved in the teaching and student assessment of several undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and currently I co-ordinate our Year 3 Health Psychology and Wellbeing course. Furthermore, I supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and dissertations.

My research expertise is in the psychology of chronic pain, with a specific focus on the impact of diagnostic uncertainty on clinical outcomes, such as depression, anxiety and disability in chronic pain patients. I am in particular interested in student well-being and quality of life, and my current research projects focus on the impact of chronic pain on university students’ psychological and social functioning and their academic progress. My research involves varied research methods, ranging from grounded theory in qualitative studies to structural equation modelling in large data sets. I am a member of the Centre for the Study of Pain and Well-being.

I established and convene THESIS - Teaching in Higher Education: Supporting and Inspiring Students. The aim of this pedagogic group is to encourage innovation in teaching practice and support students and educational practice in the Department of Psychology, across the institution and beyond.
