Personal profile

I am an AHRC funded postgraduate research student working on a thesis titled 'Are We On the Same Page? A Critical Analysis of the "Text-Based"/"Non-Text-Based" Divide in Contemporary English Theatre'I received a BA (Hons.) First Class in English Literature from the University of Southampton in 2011 and have since completed an MA in Theatre and Performance at Queen Mary, University of London, graduating with Distinction in 2014. I have spoken at a number of conferences and my work has won the Giving Voice to the Nation 2013 Postgraduate Essay Competition and the TaPRA Postgraduate Essay Prize 2014.

In addition to my research, I have worked for a number of years as a theatre critic and arts journalist. My writing has appeared in publications including The Guardian, The Stage, Exeunt, Time Out, WhatsOnStage, Fest and The Space. In 2014 and 2015 I was also the deputy editor of Noises Off, the magazine of the National Student Drama Festival.

From 2015-2016 I was co-editor of the postgraduate journal Platform, which is based in the Department of Drama and Theatre at Royal Holloway. I am also currently on the Backpages editorial team at Contemporary Theatre Review.

Research interests

My current doctoral research sets out to ask what it is that remains problematic about the text and its relation to performance within the contemporary context of the English theatre sector. It proceeds from two central propositions: first, that there remains something conceptually unresolved at the heart of the relationship between text and performance; second, that the dichotomy between supposedly ‘text-based’ and ‘non-text-based’ work in the English theatre sector is as much a result of contextual factors – including funding, education and reception – as it is of theatre practice. My overarching aim throughout is to disrupt this false yet divisive rhetorical binary, deconstructing some of the key attitudes and assumptions about theatrical texts that underpin it. My other research interests include authorship, adaptation and dramaturgy.
