Caroline Harris is a poet, writer, publisher and educator who is currently a PhD student in the English Department at Royal Holloway. She is the editor of ground-breaking non-fiction collection M-Boldened: Menopause Conversations We All Need to Have (Flint/The History Press, October 2020).

Her interdisciplinary practice-based PhD brings together innovative digital and material poetries of deer, the poetics of nonhuman others (including in the work of Joy Harjo, Maggie O’Sullivan, Alice Oswald, Pascale Petit, Joan Retallack and in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight) and current philosophical, cultural and ecological theory. Her research interests cross experimental poetics, literature, animal studies, the materialist turn in philosophy, translation (between media and species), feminist theory, with a particular focus on the growing field of Cute Studies.

Debut poetry pamphlet and artist’s bookwork SCRUB Management Handbook No.1 Mere was commissioned and published by Singing Apple Press (2018). Copies are held in the collections of the National Poetry Library and Bodleian Library. Scholarly activity includes a chapter in Contemporary Publishing and the Culture of Books (Routledge), journal article in The Blue Notebook: Journal of Artist’s Books (October 2020) and essay in Love Spells & Rituals for Another World (2021). Poetry and practice have been published in Fake (Corrupted Poetry), Finished Creatures, Green Blues, The Phare, PERVERSE, Rewilding: An Ecopoetic Anthology (CTC Poetry), with a sound piece, Cut-out Bambi: The Soundtrack (2021) on digital poetics site Permeable Barrier. Language art has been exhibited at the Art Park Gallery, Rhodes and The Plough Arts Centre, Devon, among others.

Co-organiser with Dr Isabel Galleymore (University of Birmingham) of AWW-STRUCK: Creative and Critical Approaches to Cuteness, a seminar and reading group series, and co-organiser of the School of Humanities 2020 online PGR Colloquium.

Senior Lecturer and Course Leader of the BA Publishing (Combined) at Bath Spa University until summer 2019. As well as teaching, marking, quality assurance, this role involved strategic planning, design and review of modules for the Publishing course and a new Journalism and Publishing single honours degree. Seminar Leader on the Royal Holloway English module ‘Introducing English Poetry’.  

Previously, Caroline has had careers in journalism (The Observer, The Sunday Telegraph) and book publishing. She is co-director of Harris + Wilson, which collaborates with authors and brands to produce high-spec illustrated non-fiction books for world-leading publishers (Little Brown, Octopus, Laurence King). 

She is also the author of Ms Harris’s Book of Green Household Management (John Murray, 2009), a YA novel and non-fiction books for children.
