Personal profile

This research examines the unintended outcomes of performance management systems in the higher education sector in the UK. It develops a typology of the range of the unintended behavioural and psychological responses displayed by academics as a reaction to performance management systems and which go against the outcomes intended by the designers of the systems. Using social learning theory, this research further examines how such responses to performance management systems are learned, practised and maintained in universities. The derived typology is also relevant to other sectors beyond higher education.
