Research interests

My PhD research examines the roles played by museums and art galleries in contemporary society, how they are governed, and the accountability implications of adopting a new public management style for governing these organisations. A Foucauldian theoretical framework is developed by drawing from the governmentality literature for understanding the knowledge and know-how of governing these organisations. This theoretical framework sheds light on the implications of the new public management style of governance adopted and its influences over the actions of museums and art galleries. Empirical data have been collected from interviews conducted with trustees, curators, and senior managers of UK museums and art galleries and are discussed in the context of the governmentality framework developed. The research provides novel theoretical and empirical insights into how museums and art galleries are governed and how governance structures shape and prioritise forms of accountability practices.
