Before joining Royal Holloway as a Senior Lecturer in Criminology in 2019, I spent 12 years in the US. During this period, I worked at American University, Washington DC (2006-2012); California State University, Stanislaus (2013-2016); and California State University, East Bay (2016-2018). Between 2001-2006 I worked at the University of Cambridge Institute of Criminology as Director of the MSt Programme in Applied Criminology & Police Management.
I am a qualitative criminologist. My research interests include female criminality; sex offending; prisons; and sociological theories of crime.
Prior to entering academia I worked as a practitioner in the criminal justice system My interest in criminology was sparked when I worked as a volunteer at a medium security young offender institution. I spent two years as a lecturer at HMP Highpoint teaching drama, English, and basic skills. I also worked as a creative arts & drama officer for Cambridgeshire Probation Service.
My teaching interests include Gender & Crime, Criminological Theory, Qualitative Research Methods, Penal Policy, Prisons, and Policing.
