Personal profile

Research interests

My main research interests concern readers, readership and reception, the evolution of genre, participatory culture, and multi-modal narratives from the 19th century to the present. I am currently investigating these issues in the specific context of Victorian Nonsense. Recently, I have also developed an interest in the interaction between botany, geography, horticulture, flower symbolism, and Victorian genre writing.

Teaching

Since joining Royal Holloway, I have taught on and have written materials for a range of courses in the English Department, at Royal Holloway International, and in the Centre for the Development of Academic Skills. These courses included:

  • Modern Critical Theory
  • Critical Practice
  • Background to Modern Britain for Social Sciences Students
  • Contemporary Britain
  • Dissertation Writing for the Social Sciences
  • Critical Thinking
  • English Through the Media

While at RHI and CeDAS, I also supervised research projects, ran academic skills workshops focused on research and writing skills for home and international students, and co-developed the Cultural Studies and the Arts coursebook used on the Royal Holloway International Foundation Programme.
