Organisation profile

The Department of Digital Innovation and Management (DIAM) pursues world-leading, impactful research across four key streams:

  • Business transformation through information technologies. Our research examines how information systems and technologies become embedded in and transform business processes and practices. Rather than taking a techno-centric view, we view this as a co-constitutive process between technology and organisations.
  • Understanding human-technology interaction. We investigate how people use and interact with emerging technologies like AI, virtual/augmented reality, and social media. This includes studying how these technologies shape and afford certain types of behaviours and experiences online and offline.
  • Improving operations and supply chain sustainability. We study how to use operations management, logistics, and supply chain principles to develop more sustainable business operations and reduce environmental impact.
  • Critically examining technology's consequences. We maintain a critical lens on the effects of emerging technologies like AI on citizens, organisations, and society. Our research explores areas such as algorithmic bias, privacy erosion, inequality, and other ethical issues arising from technological advancement.

Our research work routinely appears in top academic journals and at prestigious international conferences. Colleagues have also won substantial external funding from UK Research Councils such as EPSRC, ESRC, AHRC, Innovate UK, and other government and private funding bodies.

Our faculty members come from diverse academic backgrounds including information systems, operations management, social sciences, computer science, and engineering. This interdisciplinary expertise informs and strengthens the department’s teaching across areas like digital business innovations (BSc Management with Digital Innovation, MSc Digital Business), MSc Business Analytics, and MSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management. By bringing multi-disciplinary research insights into the classroom, we provide students with cutting-edge knowledge and skills highly relevant to an increasingly complex world.
