Organisation profile

Organisation profile

Staff in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures have strong international profiles. Drawing on their research, they contribute to teaching in four language areas: French, German, Italian and Spanish. They also collaborate on interdisciplinary courses in Comparative Literature and Culture, History of Art and Visual Culture, Film Studies, Translation Studies and Liberal Arts.

Publications arise from a research environment that encourages exchange across traditional disciplinary boundaries, geograpies and periods. They include numerous monographs, articles in peer-reviewed journals, edited and co-edited volumes and yearbooks, and catalogues. Our research encompasses areas as varied as literary studies and critical theory, film, philosophy, visual and performing arts. We are active in national and international subject associations and learned societies, and frequently speak at, contribute to and help to organise seminars, academic conferences, public symposia, exhibitions and creative workshops around the world. Our excellence was recently confirmed by the results of the Research Assessment Exercise of 2021.

We are proud of our record in recruiting and supporting postgraduate researchers at both Masters (MRes) and doctoral level, and welcome applications and expressions of interest at any time.
