'Women as Victim-Offenders: Negotiating the Paradox' (One-Day Conference organised by the Women, Crime and Criminal Justice Network, a division of the British Society of Criminology)

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

Invited keynote speaker at roundtable event to close the conference. My contributions were based on my ESRC-funded doctoral research with repeatedly criminalised women, and drew on my recently published co-authored paper on the pre-prison trauma of women convicted of murder.

The overall aim of the conference was to provide a space for academics and practitioners working with women offenders to discuss and negotiate the paradox of victimisation and offending. A
range of issues were explored, such as the problems with dichotomising experiences of offending and victimisation; ensuring experiences of choice and agency are understood when exploring women’s experiences; the role of feminism and the impact this has on the development and analysis of such work and research; and the potential impact that academic research may have on policy and practice within this context.

The conference offered an opportunity to hear from established academics in the field, as well as learning about emerging research and work in this area and contribute to group discussions regarding future directions.
