United Kingdom! Radical Television Drama, BFI Southbank, November - December 2009

Activity: OtherPublic engagement, outreach and knowledge exchange - Festival/exhibition

Description

This was a two-month season of cinema screenings, events and talks exploring how radical television drama addressed society and politics in the 1960s and 1970s, responded to the challenges of Thatcherism in the 80s, and adapted to Thatcher’s legacy and the rise of New Labour in the 90s to the present.

The season was conceived by colleagues (John Hill, Rob Turnock, Jonathan Powell, Susanna Capon) in the Department of Media Arts, Royal Holloway, University of London, co-organised with BFI Southbank and partly funded by the London Centre for Arts and Cultural Exchange (LCACE).

The season, and accompanying events, led to a special issue of the Journal of British Cinema and Television on 'Radical TV Drama' edited by John Hill.
