Paper: 'Niche Expansion in Robert Lepage's Evolving Theatre Ecology'This paper argues that in the extant text oeuvre of Québécois director Robert Lepage a methodology based in scenographic dramaturgy is in place and functions to make meaning while also defining Lepage’s signature visual aesthetic. By drawing on Lepage’s production of The Damnation of Faust as well as my dual auditing experiences at the Metropolitan Opera, during which I observed Lepage, his team of Ex Machina collaborators and the Ring cycle cast rehearsing Siegfried and Götterdämmerung, my brief presentation will argue that when interpreting an extant text, Lepage makes meaning through a scenographic dramaturgy consisting of the following three techniques: abstract transformative space, kinetic text bodies and a turn to the time/place ‘resources’ often employed in his devised work (and based on Lawrence and Anna Halprin’s RSVP Cycles). In short, this enquiry looks to unpack how Lepage’s signature scenography ‘writes’ unique visual texts for canonical narratives and where scenography figures in contemporary definitions of the theatre auteur.
