Despite decades of research on strategy, we still know little about what the concept of strategy means to actual strategists. Using a three-stage qualitative design involving interviews with strategy directors and a longitudinal case study of a FTSE-100 firm, we offer three findings about the first-order view of strategy. First, we expose four dimensions of the meaning of strategy: functional, contextual, identity and metaphorical. Second, we conceptualize these dimensions as identity-constructive and contested features of strategy discourse that act as interpretation and resource mechanisms. Finally, through the notion of first-order strategy discourse, we extend strategy-as-practice, discourse and institutional theory literatures.
